Youth Highlights

At Mount Pilgrim, Pastor Bilberry encourages the Youth to strive for excellence in all they do. This page highlights the good things done by the Youth of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church.


Youth from Mount Pilgrim participated in the Region 3 Louisiana Baptist Youth Encampment competitions, which tested their knowledge of the Bible, their execution of drama and poetry, and their performances in vocals, instrumentals, and dance.

The BYE group is composed of the following youth: Joel Diggs, Stephanie Diggs, BreAnna Ellis, Darrin Ellis, Cierra Fountain, Tiara Jett, Christina Porter, Melissia Porter, Sabrina Stansberry (away at a basketball competition), Sterling Wright, Kiandra Williams, Kirklin Williams, Kyra Williams, and Raveon Williams (unable to attend).

On a 30-point scale, our youth received:
22 points - Bible Knowledge and Speed (Renita McKnight, Cierra Fountain, Joel Diggs, Melissia Porter, Kirklin Williams)
30 points - Liturgical Dance (Stephanie Diggs danced to "Now Behold The Lamb")
29 points - Instrumental (Cierra Fountain played the piano)
28 points - Poetry (Renita McKnight and Kiandra Williams recited, "If My People")
27 points - Skit (written by Dana Williams, performed by Darrin Ellis, Tiara Jett, Kirklin Williams, Joel Diggs, Kyra Williams, Christina Porter, Melissia Porter, Kiandra Williams)
26 points - Vocal: Group (everyone)
29 points - Vocal: Individual (Sterling Wright)

J-P LaFleur

Minister John-Pierre LaFleur won first place in Informal Speaking at the LCTE English Expo at Louisiana State University on February 16, 2008.  J-P holds the following leadership roles:

  • National Baptist Convention Junior Laymen 2nd Vice President
  • Louisiana Baptist State Convention Junior Laymen President
  • Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Junior Laymen President
  • Louisiana Leadership Institute President
  • Baton Rouge Magnet High School Student Government Association Treasurer
  • JP's favorite scripture is John 4:7-8.  Look it up!

Student of the Year!

Congratulations to senior Ashleigh Johnson, the Istrouma High School Student of the Year for the 2007-2008 school year.  Ashleigh has outstanding grades and scored high enough on her ACT to receive scholarship offers to several colleges.  She also cheerleads, has a part-time job, and is fully committed to Christ.  Ashleigh is an outstanding young woman who brings joy to her family and glory to God.
Ms. Toya Danielle Spruel, Miss Southern High 2007

Congratulations to Ms. Toya Spruel, Southern Laboratory High School's 2007 Homecoming Queen.  Toya is an all-around student.  She is: on the Assistant Director's Honors List with a 3.7 GPA; captain of the cheerleader squad; on the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 lists of "Who's Who Among American High School Students"; a member of the National Honor Society; a 2007 debutante of the Nu Gamma Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; a member of the National Youth Leadership Forum; and Miss Southern High, 2007.  Toya is also a member of the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Young Adult Choir, in the Youth Division of the Higher Ground (Sunday School), and a dancer on the Liturgical Dance Team.
