A Deacon at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church had a vision a few years ago to share his love of horses and riding with youth and individuals with disabilities in the community. From that vision, 3M Acres / Christian Youth Riders was born. It is a therapeutic horse riding program tasked with helping people with physical, mental, and psychological impairments. Its clients may use the equine facilities and participate in community activities.
Deacon Larry McCaleb operates 3M Acres from his farm in Zachary, Louisiana, about five miles north of Mount Pilgrim. McCaleb's program offers riding as:
- a recreational and leisure activity;
- a sporting and competitive opportunity;
- an educational tool; and
- therapy.
McCaleb says "equine activities can achieve psychological and educational goals for any persons with physical or mental impairment." His goal is to provide individuals in his program with skills they can use throughout life. McCaleb's students participate in horse shows and parades, including Southern University's annual Homecoming Parade.
Deacon McCaleb would love to share his vision with you, and invites you to share your resources with 3M Acres. To become a participant or volunteer, call (225) 937-1993, or write him c/o Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church. The address for 3M Acres Inc. is 18125 Old Baker Road, Zachary, LA 70791.
